Ted H. Braithwaite
(1944 – 2020)

Born January 23, 1944 in Manti, Utah, Ted moved with his family of four siblings numerous times during his childhood. He lived in California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and ultimately El Paso, Texas where he met his future wife, Marilyn. He graduated from Bel Air High School in 1962 and began his studies at Texas Western (now UTEP) in the spring of 1963. In the summer of 1966 he was drafted into the army. Following his service, he returned to El Paso and completed his BA in art education in 1969 with a minor in printmaking.

He began his teaching career at Lamar Elementary School and became affectionately known as "Mr. B." Ted taught art at Lamar Elementary and Morehead Middle School for a total of 32 years. He introduced his 6th and 7th grade students to color theory, portrait and perspective drawing, watercolor, linoleum printing, and paiper-mâché.

Shortly after he married in 1973, Ted became interested in designing and making stained glass windows. He got his start at Jubilee Glass (El Paso) and worked there as a hobby while teaching. Longing to have a place of his own to create, he had a lovely studio built above the garage of his home. From 1986 until a year or so before his death, his studio became his refuge from the world. It was his place to create and be with his thoughts in his own space.

Ted was inspired by nature and landscapes in the places that he had lived growing up in the Southwest. His subject matter included flowers, animals, scenic landscapes, desert, Native American design, El Paso’s Franklin Mountins, and “whoop-de-doos” (abstract swirls).

Ted passed peacefully on July 1, 2020 in El Paso. Those who have received his stained glass creations, either by commission or as a gift, indeed own a treasure from a talented artist and craftsman.

This site was lovingly created by his only child Catherine (Cat) to celebrate his inspirational portfolio of work.
